Judge Haley to retire

Posted: Monday, December 1, 2014 5:04 pm
TRAVERSE CITY — No one will replace 86th District Court Judge Michael Haley when he wraps up his 18-year career. A reduction in judgeships enacted by state legislators means that Haley's retirement on Jan. 31 will eliminate his seat from the district's bench. That will leave his fellow district judges Michael Stepka and Thomas J. Phillips without a third colleague to split an already-busy docket. Haley planned to retire this year, a decision he said the reduction made more difficult. He opted to run unopposed for reelection in November to ensure his availability as a visiting judge. He said if another candidate ran and won that the position would have been "eliminated right away." "The short version is I wanted to be available to the court," he said.
